During the 1997–98 financial crisis, Bank Indonesia provided liquidity support to many banks experiencing difficulties. This policy became controversial because of the magnitude of the likely losses to the government, which in the end would have to be borne by the general public. Suspicions of corruption involving bankers and officials of Bank Indonesia fuelled the debate. Surprisingly, however, concerns of this kind have not been raised in relation to the far larger amount of support provided to banks by the government in the form of recapitalisation bonds. The public’s lack of understanding of the operations of the banking sector further complicated the debate. This paper attempts to shed some light on the central bank’s actions and on the proposed solutions to the problems that arose from them. |

Reflections on the Crisis And some notes on the Asean-Japan Economic Relations
INTRODUCTION
I am honored to be invited by the organizer to share with such distinguish audiences my observations concerning ASEAN after the 1997 crisis. At the same time I am humbled by the fact that I have to address issues that have become so complex since I left Bank Indonesia more than five years ago, so much so that I am not up to date with what have been developing. I have been forcing myself to get back studying the issues. Still, I am overwhelmed with the fast development of the issues. |

Menyusun tulisan mengenai perlunya kehati-hatian dalam dunia keuangan untuk saya mengandung rasa takut. Sebagai orang yang pernah menjadi pelaku dari otorita moneter dan pengawasan perbankan posisi saya, paling sedikit menurut berbagai kalangan, sangat lemah untuk bicara mengenai topik tersebut. Sebagai implikasinya ada rasa takut bahwa peringatan yang dikemukakan di sini tidak akan diperhatikan. |
