Dear Friends, The year started badly for us, because of the tsunami, which had claimed so many lives and had created such a havoc in Aceh and in Nias, just a few days before. Many people donated generously, but the damage to human soul has yet to be repaired, My activities started in January, when I travelled to Taiwan to be part of the entourage for my nephew Jonas’ wedding or rather engagement, because Taiwan people like to have the the traditional engagement celebrated in style. We agreed and travelled to Taipeh and had a lot of fun. A week later the wedding was celebrated in Bali at the Ritz-Carlton. Beginning February saw me in Kuala Lumpur for a presentation on the Peranakans in Indonesia at the Peranakan of Malaysia festival. The festival was brightened with a performance of the Baba group, that was very amusing and enjoyable. |

Chinese food has always been very popular in the Indonesian archipelago. As early as 1225, Zhao Rugua, who wrote the book Zhufan zhi or “Monograph on the foreigners” mentioned that merchants who wanted to trade in Brunei used to present the king with delicious dishes first, before starting any business. Thus cooks were among the staff of the trade missions sent by the kings to foreign countries. |

What is the reason that a whole ethnic group would be referred to by a term that literally means “womb”? The answer is that originally Peranakan referred to those people born out of the womb of an indigenous woman and fathered by a foreign man. At present the term refers almost exclusively to the ethnic Chinese with a native mother or grandmother and especially those who have been here for several generations. At what time these foreigners came to the Archipelago is not known, but a reconstruction from archeological finds on land or in sea, showed that it must have been since the 2nd century B.C. that the traders came with their sailing ships in search of spices and exotic goods, such as feathers of the bird of paradise, seacucumbers, sharkfins, bird’s nests, pearls etc. |

Kites at the kite festival in Ancol
Dear friends
What I have done this year? For the first half not much I must admit. But that was very good, because it gave me time to prepare a book that I always wanted to publish. Actually nothing new, just some old articles written in English which I translated into Bahasa Indonesia and added a few more articles originally written in Bahasa. The result is a small book, which came out in October this year.
